Construction of a 500 kV Transmission Ring Around Khartoum
A loan agreement for KD 60 Million was signed in the State of Kuwait on the 25th of April 2019 to help finance the construction of a 500 kV Transmission Ring Around Khartoum.
The loan agreement was signed by H.E. Abdul Monem Mohammed Altayeb, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning, on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Sudan, and by H.E. Mr. Abdlatif Yousef Al-Hamad, Director General/ Chairman of the Board of Directors, on behalf of the Arab Fund.
The project, which expected to be completed by the end of 2021, aims at evacuating the energy that is expected to be produced from the under-construction and planned power plants in the city of Khartoum and its suburbs, absorbing the energy that will be imported from the Ethiopian grid, and reducing the losses and bottlenecks in the Sudanese transmission network. This will be accomplished through the construction of a 500 kV transmission ring around the city.
The project includes the following main components:
The loan will carry interest at 2.0% per annum and will be repayable over 30 years, including a 7 year grace period.
The Sudanese Electricity Transmission Company (SETCO) will be the beneficiary of the loan and will be responsible for implementing the project.
With the signing of this loan, the Arab Fundís total contribution to financing projects in the Republic of Sudan now amounts to KD 894 Million.
